NASA 'Super Guppy' Swallows Supersonic NASA Jets (Photos)

Two supersonic NASA jets were swallowed whole by the space agency's outsized Super Guppy Transport plane in California this month so that they could be ferried to Texas.

The pair of retired T-38 jets, which are no longer airworthy, were loaded into the Guppy on March 18 at NASA Dryden Flight Research Center in Edwards, Calif.,and flown to El Paso. The jets' parts will be cannibalized and used for other T-38s that are still flying.

The loading process, which took over two hours, involved opening the Guppy's nose and hoisting the T-38s onto a specially designed pallet that was put into the Guppy's 25-foot (7.6-meter) diameter "stomach" of the NASA Super Guppy aircraft. Only the T-38s' wingtips needing to be removed so that the jets could fit inside the carrier, Johnson Space Center flight engineer David Elliott, the Guppy's project manager, said in a statement.

The Super Guppy is the last in its class of wide-bodied aircraft to have transported NASA's unwieldy cargo to their launch site, including rockets for the Apollo program and room-size modules for?the International Space Station. The plane is based at Ellington Airport in Houston, near NASA's Johnson Space Center. [See more photos of NASA's Super Guppy swallowing jets]

The first Guppy aircraft, called the Pregnant Guppy, was built from a heavily modified KC-97 Stratotanker in 1962 by the California-based company Aero Spacelines. Its 19-foot (5.8-meter) diameter cargo compartment was the largest such cavity of any aircraft at the time and it was designed to hold the second stage of a Saturn rocket for the?Apollo program.

The next generation, Dubbed the B377SG Super Guppy, was built in 1965 and was outfitted with a 25-foot (7.6-meter) diameter cargo bay, more powerful turboprop engines, a pressurized cockpit, and a hinged nose for easier loading of cargo, according to NASA.

The planes were operated by Aero Spacelines until NASA purchased the aircraft in 1981. The space agency still uses the Super Guppy Transport ? the last generation of Guppy that Aero Spacelines built. The plane is slated to bring the Orion Heat Shield from Textron Defense Systems near Boston to NASA's Kennedy Space Center at the end of March. The U.S. Department of Defense and government contractors also have used the Guppy to ferry aircraft and large components around the continent.

U.N. approves creation of special combat force for Congo

Last week, during his Ryan Seacrest-hosted special on The CW, Justin Timberlake said that music is the "most special" hat of the many hats he wears as an entertainer. Now, we can't psychoanalyze JT?as much as everyone may have wanted to during his year-long courtship of the world's attention. Supreme Court Arguments Leave Anti-Gay Movement Humiliated: Salon

Salon:

It didn?t take long for the empty truth about the discriminatory Defense of Marriage Act to be exposed Wednesday, and there was little equality opponents could do. At the Supreme Court hearing, Elena Kagan, the newest justice, went to the House Report from Congress when it passed the law in 1996, and summarized DOMA?s entire legal underpinning: ?Congress decided to reflect and honor a collective moral judgment and to express moral disapproval of homosexuality.?

FBI UFO memo is bureau's most viewed public record

FBI UFO memo: The Federal Bureau of Investigation says that its Hottel memo, which reports on an alleged flying saucer sighting, has been viewed nearly a million times since 2011.

By Megan Gannon,?News Editor / March 27, 2013

A single-page March 22, 1950, memo by Guy Hottel, special agent in charge of the Washington Field Office, regarding UFOs is the most viewed document in the FBI Vault, an online repository of public records.

FBI

The FBI says its most viewed public record is a memo from 1950 recounting a strange story someone told an agent about three "flying saucers" that were allegedly recovered in New Mexico.

The so-called?Hottel memo?was first released in the late 1970s under the Freedom of Information Act, but it's been viewed nearly a million times since 2011, when the FBI launched an online database of public records called the Vault.

Dated March 22, 1950, the memo was addressed to FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover and written by Guy Hottel, then head of the Bureau's field office in Washington, D.C. Hottel was reporting what an Air Force investigator said that someone else told him about the crashed saucers.

The following details of the report have perhaps fueled the hopes of those who want to believe: "They [the saucers] were described as being circular in shape with raised centers, approximately 50 feet in diameter. Each one was occupied by three bodies of human shape but only three feet tall, dressed in metallic cloth of a very fine texture. Each body was bandaged in a manner similar to the blackout suits used by speed fliers and test pilots."

For the record, FBI officials said in a statement on Monday (March 25) that the Hottel memo "does not prove the?existence of UFOs; it is simply a second- or third-hand claim that we never investigated."

Bureau officials also say there is no reason to believe that the story has anything to do with the infamous?1947 Roswell crash?in New Mexico.?Hoover did actually order his agents?to verify any?UFO sightings?after the?Roswell incident and until?July 1950. That?the Hottel report was never investigated suggests "our Washington Field Office didn't think enough of that flying saucer story to look into it," the FBI statement says.

Gay marriage battle heats up in Illinois

Though both Illinois houses have a Democratic majority and the governor has said he would sign a law opening marriage to same-sex couples, gay marriage is facing a tough fight in Chicago.

Like many gay couples in the United States, Theresa Volpe and Mercedes Santos of Chicago will be keeping a close eye on the U.S. Supreme Court this week as it hears arguments on two same-sex marriage cases.

' + google_ads[0].line2 + '
' + google_ads[0].line3 + '

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

The high court review coincides with a crucial moment at home in the couple's fight to make Illinois the tenth state in the nation to legalize same-sex marriage. Volpe and Santos, who have personally lobbied Illinois lawmakers on this issue, worry about delays in drumming up enough votes for passage of a bill in their state and a growing campaign from opponents.

Supporters had hoped the bill would sail through the Democratic-majority legislature in President Barack Obama's home state in January. But it took until Valentine's Day to go through the Senate and was still several votes short in the House by late March.

"What's going on in Illinois is a little disturbing ? we're worried and anxious, but I know they're working hard to make things happen," said Santos, who is bringing up two children with Volpe.

The delay underscores the difficulty of securing approval for gay marriage, even in a state with strong Democratic majorities in the legislature and a Democratic governor who supports it.

During a two-week legislative spring break that began on Monday, both sides were intensifying their efforts.

Opponents of the bill are focusing mainly on the more conservative and rural areas of the state south of Chicago, and some African-American districts in Chicago.

More than 425,000 robo-calls have been placed to constituents in more than 20 districts, according to Paul Caprio, director of Family-Pac, an Illinois-based family values political action group opposed to gay marriage.

Calls to six African-American districts have featured the voice of former state Senator James Meeks, a prominent Chicago black minister opposed to same-sex nuptials.

"We've had tremendous response from the minority community on this issue," Caprio said.

In one call to people in southwestern Illinois, Caprio's voice asks voters whether their state lawmaker stands for "the Chicago homosexuals, or your family?"

'LIKE ANY OTHER FAMILY'

Bernard Cherkasov, executive director of Equality Illinois, a Chicago-based gay rights organization, said proponents were focusing more on personal appeals to legislators from constituents, including ministers and rabbis and gay couples themselves.

"I do feel really optimistic. We're really close, we're in striking distance to passing the bill," he said.

Volpe, 42, and Santos, 47, are among the gay couples who taken their appeal to lawmakers in the Illinois state capital of Springfield.

They have been together for 21 years and have two children, Ava, 8, and Jaidon, 4, conceived through an anonymous donor. The couple became outspoken advocates for gay marriage after Jaidon suffered kidney failure two years ago and was in danger of dying.

While Theresa filled out the paperwork at the hospital, Mercedes sat with him in his room. But then Theresa was told she could not see Jaidon, as there was no hospital policy for two mothers.

They believe marriage will be easier to explain to people at hospitals and other facilities than the civil union they formed after Illinois approved that option in 2011. And they want the federal rights heterosexual couples have, including Social Security benefits and tax exemptions for a surviving spouse's inheritance.

"We want people to realize that we're just like any other family ? we love our kids ? we don't do anything special but be parents," Santos said.

On Tuesday, the Supreme Court will hear arguments in a challenge against California's voter-approved ban on same-sex marriage known as Proposition 8. On Wednesday, the justices will hear arguments on the Defense of Marriage Act, which excludes gay couples from federal benefits.

It is difficult to predict how the court might rule on Proposition 8, and how that would affect other states. One option could affect Illinois and other states that are like California in allowing civil unions but forbidding actual marriage. The Obama administration wants the Supreme Court to strike down Proposition 8 because it relegates such same-sex civil unions to a lower legal status.

Public opinion nationally has been turning in favor of gay marriage and civil unions. A Reuters/Ipsos poll in mid-March found 63 percent of Americans in favour of gay marriage or civil unions.

Scientists image deep magma beneath Pacific seafloor volcano

Mar. 27, 2013 ? Since the plate tectonics revolution of the 1960s, scientists have known that new seafloor is created throughout the major ocean basins at linear chains of volcanoes known as mid-ocean ridges. But where exactly does the erupted magma come from?

Researchers at Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego now have a better idea after capturing a unique image of a site deep in the Earth where magma is generated.

Using electromagnetic technology developed and advanced at Scripps, the researchers mapped a large area beneath the seafloor off Central America at the northern East Pacific Rise, a seafloor volcano located on a section of the global mid-ocean ridges that together form the largest and most active chain of volcanoes in the solar system. By comparison, the researchers say the cross-section area of the melting region they mapped would rival the size of San Diego County.

Details of the image and the methods used to capture it are published in the March 28 issue of the journal Nature.

"Our data show that mantle upwelling beneath the mid-ocean ridge creates a deeper and broader melting region than previously thought," said Kerry Key, lead author of the study and an associate research geophysicist at Scripps. "This was the largest project of its kind, enabling us to image the mantle with a level of detail not possible with previous studies."

The northern East Pacific Rise is an area where two of the planet's tectonic plates are spreading apart from each another. Mantle rising between the plates melts to generate the magma that forms fresh seafloor when it erupts or freezes in the crust.

Data for the study was obtained during a 2004 field study conducted aboard the research vessel Roger Revelle, a ship operated by Scripps and owned by the U.S. Navy.

The marine electromagnetic technology behind the study was originally developed in the 1960s by Charles "Chip" Cox, an emeritus professor of oceanography at Scripps, and his student Jean Filloux. In recent years the technology was further advanced by Steven Constable and Key. Since 1995 Scripps researchers have been working with the energy industry to apply this technology to map offshore geology as an aid to exploring for oil and gas reservoirs.

"We have been working on developing our instruments and interpretation software for decades, and it is really exciting to see it all come together to provide insights into the fundamental processes of plate tectonics," said Constable, a coauthor of the paper and a professor in the Cecil H. and Ida M. Green Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics at Scripps. "It was really a surprise to discover that melting started so deep in the mantle -- much deeper than was expected."

Key believes the insights that electromagnetics provides will continue to grow as the technology matures and data analysis techniques improve (last week Key and his colleagues announced the use of electromagnetics in discovering a magma lubricant for the planet's tectonic plates).

"Electromagnetics is really coming of age as a tool for imaging the earth," said Key. "Much of what we know about the crust and mantle is a result of using seismic techniques. Now electromagnetic technology is offering promise for further discoveries."

Key also has future plans to apply electromagnetic technology to map subglacial lakes and groundwater in the polar regions.

In addition to Key and Constable, coauthors of the paper include Lijun Liu of the University of Illinois and Anne Pommier of Arizona State University.

The study was supported by the National Science Foundation and the Seafloor Electromagnetic Methods Consortium at Scripps.

Microsoft updates Mail, Calendar and People apps in Windows 8, Windows RT

Just as last week was winding down, we heard a credible rumor that Microsoft was about to update some of the native apps found in Windows 8 / Windows RT. Turns out, that report was on the money: the company unveiled some changes today to Mail, Calendar and People, with a particular focus on speed improvements. None of these updates will be available to download until tonight or tomorrow, says a Microsoft rep, so don't all of you go making a beeline for the Windows Store at once now. If you're itching for a preview, though, we've got a summary of the new features after the break, along with a few extra screenshots.

I-Mego Walker Junior

There's no shortage of noise-canceling headphones on the market currently, but there's a definite lack of quality, inexpensive options. At $139.99 (direct), I-Mego's Walker Junior (no association with the musician Junior Walker intended, it seems) is inexpensive and its noise canceling circuitry is decent. However, while it does an admirable job blocking out ambient noise, considering its price, its relative success in this realm is balanced by distortion issues at high volumes. The Walker Junior is designed well, with a removable cable and collapsible design, and is a reasonable budget option to consider if your top priority is noise cancellation and not audio performance.

Design
There's something edgy and almost futuristic about the design of the Walker Junior. The all-black, matte surface is graced by a white X on each earcup which, from a distance, looks almost as if it has been stitched into the surface.

The padded headband features a hinge at the center of the top panel?it folds in half at this point, and then hinges above the earpads allow it to fold down flat. This ergonomic design allows for easy storage and packing, and does so without sacrificing comfort?the Walker Junior stays comfortable over long listening sessions.I-Mego Walker Junior inline

Unfortunately, the headphones use a AAA battery instead of a rechargeable one. The battery compartment, as well as the On/Off switch for the noise cancellation circuitry, is located on the right earcup, while the cable connects to the left.

The cable is removable, which adds some value to the headphones, as cables are often the culprit when a pair begins to malfunction?replacing a cable is far more affordable than replacing an otherwise functional headphone pair. There's no inline remote or microphone for mobile devices, but this is fairly standard for noise-canceling headphones.?

Also included: a ?-inch headphone jack adapter, an airplane jack adapter, a zip-up protective pouch which the headphone collapse and fold down into, and the aforementioned AAA battery and detachable cable.

Performance
On songs with deep bass, like The Knife's "Silent Shout," the Walker Junior struggles at top volumes with distortion. These top volumes are too loud to listen to for long periods of time, however, and at high?but not maximum?levels, the distortion begins to disappear. At about 75 percent volume on an iPhone 4s, there was no distortion at all, and the sub-bass frequencies of the synth kick drums were delivered with plenty of low frequency presence. This was with the noise cancellation activated.

With the headphones in passive mode (the power switched to off), the headphones lose a significant bit of volume, as well as what feels like a little brightness. The same track from the Knife, however, does not distort at top volume in passive mode, and there is still a decent sense of low frequency response.

Tracks with less challenging low frequency content, like Bill Callahan's "Drover", still suffer from some far less noticeable distortion at top, unsafe listening levels, while at lower volumes, there's no hint of anything but clean audio. At these levels, with the noise cancellation engaged, the sound signature seems a bit muted, as if it could benefit from a bit of added brightness or crispness in the high-mids. Callahan's vocals are missing the treble edge that lends some gravel to his baritone delivery here. The lower frequencies are a bit more gracefully represented, with the drumming on this track receiving a nice bit of low-end thump, without things going overboard and the drums taking the focus away from the vocals.

Similar characteristics are highlighted by Jay-Z and Kanye West's "No Church in the Wild." The kick drum loop that starts the song off, as well as the vocals, could all use a bit of high-mid edge to them, to add more definition to the mix. The sub-bass synth hits underneath the drum loop, however, as well as the sustain of kick drum, have a nice, round bass presence to them?nothing overwhelming, but a good level of power (at moderate volumes). Both the Callahan and the Jay-Z/Kanye West track would benefit from a slightly brighter, crisper presence from the high-mids and up. The mix is not muffled, but it does lean more to the lows and low-mids.

As for its noise cancellation performance, the Walker Junior does a good job of eliminating a fairly wide band of ambient noise, but like most noise cancellation circuitry in this price range, it also delivers this noise reduction with an audible high frequency hiss. It's not very loud, you won't hear it when you're playing music, and it sounds like very faint tape hiss, so it's nothing really that unpleasant. It's a sign, however, of lower quality noise reduction circuitry than you'll find, say, in a Bose QuietComfort 15.

If quality noise reduction?and no hiss when there's no music playing?is a top priority, the Bose QC15 is probably the way to go. However, unlike the Walker Junior, the QC15 cannot be used in passive mode, when the circuitry is turned off. If excellent sonic performance is your main priority, but you don't want to miss out on quality noise cancellation, the AKG K 490 NC remains a premium option?both pairs are pricier than the Walker Junior.

But that's just the issue: You're not going to find high quality noise cancellation paired with great audio performance for $140. If you can spend a little more, the?Logitech UE 6000 doesn't suffer from the same distortion issues and offers some serious bass response, and the in-ear Phiaton PS 20 NC offers strong audio performance?but you have to be okay with going the in-canal earphone route, rather than with headphones. For the price, the Walker Junior delivers solid noise cancellation, but it's not on-par with better pairs mentioned here, and in terms of audio performance, it's also outmatched. Its greatest assets are its price, its detachable cable, and the ability to use it in passive mode?but the distortion will be an understandable deal-breaker for some.

A Move into the Modern Web World: NoSQL + the Enterprise ...

The use of NoSQL databases has grown rapidly over the last 3 years. ?NoSQL?s advantages over relational technologies in scalability, performance and data model flexibility have been a big reason. Internet and mobile applications developed by Intern companies, defined as company?s whose entire business revolves around the Internet, were the first to adopt NoSQL. ?Initially it was companies like Google, Facebook, and Amazon that pioneered NoSQL and developed their own technologies internally. ?Later it was companies like LinkedIn, Zynga, AOL, and Orbitz that adopted open source technologies like Couchbase, MongoDB, and Cassandra.

Recently, there has been growing debate about the current and future penetration of NoSQL in the enterprise, broadly defined as ?brick and mortar? companies of all types. ?Some see the enterprise as the stronghold of incumbent leaders like Oracle, IBM, and Microsoft. ?Others see the enterprise following the same path as Web 2.0 companies. ?We sat down with Bob Wiederhold, CEO of Couchbase, to get his perspective.

Bob Wiederhold, President and CEO at Couchbase, has been in the technology space for more than 25 years and has been able to watch the growth of the application and software industry firsthand. Bob sees the need for a NoSQL solution that can play in the modern web world ? allowing mission critical applications to scale without the headache of holding to a fixed data schema. Below Bob answers specific questions about the readiness of NoSQL in the enterprise:

Why is NoSQL so important for new enterprise applications today?

There are big changes taking place in many enterprises and many of those changes are opening big opportunities for NoSQL databases. ?First, enterprises are internally developing more and more web-based applications to interact with their customers, suppliers, or other stakeholders. They could be revenue-producing applications that will become an increasingly important part of their business or non-revenue producing applications that make their supplier and customer interaction more efficient. In either case, these applications are likely to be SaaS-type applications that use a three-tier interactive software architecture and require the type of performance and scalability that NoSQL provides. They are complex applications that store session information, user generated data, user likes/dislikes, comments, audio, video, sensor data, telematic data, etc. and increasingly require the agility and capabilities of NoSQL. ?Media companies are just one of many examples where this is happening. Here companies like McGraw Hill, Thomson Reuters, and Sky are building innovative new applications based on NoSQL that are responding to the rapidly changing dynamics of the media industry.

Second, enterprises are buying applications for their internal use that will increasingly use NoSQL as their underlying database. ?In this case, ?buying applications? means either using vendor SaaS offerings or buying the software and running the software as a SaaS offering on their private clouds. ISVs (Independent Software Vendors) are moving away from packaged software and the two-tier client server architectures that utilized Oracle/IBM/Microsoft databases and dominated enterprise software for much of the last 20 years. Most of the newest, highest grow software vendors have already moved to SaaS models that employ modern three-tier interactive software architectures that are well suited for NoSQL. As the use of SaaS offerings continues to grow in the enterprise, so will the use of NoSQL. Salesforce, Concur, and Cisco are three examples but there are dozens more at various stages of incorporating NoSQL into their ECM, ERP, HRMS, SCM, CRM, EPM, etc. offerings for enterprise customers.

[ECM ? Enterprise Content Management, ERP ? Enterprise Resource Planning; HRMS ? Human Resource Management System; SCM ? Supply Chain Management; CRM ? Customer Relationship Management; EPM ? Enterprise Performance Management]

Third, enterprises are increasingly using NoSQL as a part of their websites and website related services. Websites are an increasingly important part of the marketing, sales, support, and customer engagement strategies of enterprises. To be competitive enterprises are improving their websites to offer more and richer services, add social networking, include gamification, improve performance, collect customer data, and much more. NoSQL is being used as the database underpinning for these rapidly evolving websites and related services.

How ready is NoSQL database technology for mission-critical enterprise deployment?

Enterprises will adopt NoSQL in much the same way as they do any other new technology. They will tend to explore and experiment with NoSQL first on non-mission critical applications and expand its use as they build expertise internally, fully characterize its strengths and weaknesses, and get comfortable with its reliability. How ready a particular NoSQL product is for a specific mission-critical application is highly dependent on the requirements of the application, the current feature-set of the NoSQL product, and the reliability of a product under heavy load. NoSQL has been proven to be very reliable at very large scale while also maintaining high performance so we?re increasingly being used for mission-critical deployments.

What are the applications/industry sectors that are best served by NoSQL technologies and why?

The first companies to leverage NoSQL were internet companies that included social gaming, advertising networks, online retail, online business services, social networking, video services, online media, etc. Enterprises that are moving quickly to adopt NoSQL include online business services, advertising, media, communications, retail, and financial services, just to name a few.

What are the issues that NoSQL addresses best?

When compared to relational databases, NoSQL provides three high-level benefits; more productive application development, higher performance, and easy scalability. To meet competitive pressures, applications have to evolve rapidly so developer productivity is crucial. ?NoSQL?s more productive application development comes in large part from the schema-less data model that a document-oriented NoSQL database provides. This data model matches better with how application developers write code and allows them to change the data they store much more quickly than is possible with relational databases.

Higher performance is needed because applications are storing and retrieving more and more data and application users demand ?snappy? performance from their apps at all times. NoSQL databases provide higher performance by distributing load across a horizontally scalable database and by employing a document data model that eliminates performance-sapping operations like complex queries, joins, and record locks that are typical in relational databases.

Finally, applications are storing more and more data and supporting a rapidly growing number of users. ?This puts a huge load on a database that must be addressed with horizontal scalability on commodity servers. NoSQL databases have been built from the ground up as distributed databases that scale horizontally on commodity servers. Relational databases are fundamentally centralized, share-everything technologies that only scale up and therefore don?t scale well.

What areas are not well served by NoSQL database technologies?

When most people discuss areas that NoSQL doesn?t handle well, they usually talk about transactions. A transaction refers to an atomic operation that requires updates to multiple data items and needs to either be completed in its entirety or rolled back to its original state. The classic example where transactions are needed is in debit/credit operations where a debit needs to happen to one account and a credit to another. ?For obvious reasons this type of transaction needs to fully complete or be rolled back to its original state. Generally speaking, when these types of operations are required, relational databases are better suited to the task.

It is important to keep in mind however, that while it is true that NoSQL databases don?t currently support transactions in the same broad way that relational databases do, saying that NoSQL doesn?t support transactions is overly simplistic. Document-oriented NoSQL databases aggregate data in a single document that would normally be found in many tables of a relational database. ?Since an individual document can be atomically updated, many ?transactions? in a relational database can easily be handled in a document-oriented NoSQL database. ?So, just because your application required transaction when it used a relational database doesn?t mean it will require them with a document-based NoSQL solution.

What about security and compliance concerns? Can they be dealt with?

Generally speaking, the NoSQL industry so far hasn?t implemented a broad set of security and compliance features in its products. As NoSQL makes its way more and more deeply into the enterprise however, security and compliance features will be increasingly important and will be an increasingly high priority on near term product roadmaps.

What is next in your view on the horizon for NoSQL? Where is it headed?

NoSQL as a category is still in the early stages of product development. While relational databases have had 40 years to evolve and mature, NoSQL has been around for just a few years. I expect there will continue to be huge feature improvements both to the core database (such as security/compliance, better transaction support, and improved support for larger and larger clusters) as well as to auxiliary tools (such as backup/restore, monitoring/alerting, and reporting). The NoSQL ecosystem will also expand significantly. ?Connectors to and integrations with data warehouses, business intelligence and reporting tools, Hadoop analytics tools, Iaas/PaaS offerings, etc. will all make it significantly easier to deploy NoSQL. Finally, NoSQL will continue to mature from a reliability perspective as companies deploy NoSQL on an increasing number of mission critical projects and products are put to the test under extreme operating loads.

(AP) ? Britain's Prince Harry is returning to the United States ? but this time he's skipping Las Vegas.

The 28-year-old prince will travel to the U.S. East Coast as well as Denver and Colorado Springs, Colorado, to support veterans' charities and get in a bit of polo.

Harry, a longtime supporter of charities that rehabilitate war veterans, will attend several events at the 2013 Warrior Games, a competition in which veteran athletes from both Britain and the United States take part.

"Prince Harry wants to highlight once again the extraordinary commitment and sacrifice of our injured servicemen and women," said Jamie Lowther-Pinkerton, Harry's private secretary.

Harry recently spent 20 weeks in Afghanistan as co-pilot gunner on an Apache attack helicopter.

His May 9-15 visit will include trips to Arlington National Cemetery, Walter Reed National Medical Center and an exhibition on Capitol Hill about land mine clearance, a favorite subject of his late mother, Princess Diana. He will also visit areas in New Jersey hard hit by Hurricane Sandy.

Harry will also play in the Sentebale Polo Cup in Greenwich, Connecticut. Sentebale ? which means "forget-me-not" ? is a charity founded by Harry and Lesotho's Prince Seeiso that helps children struggling with poverty in the tiny southern African country.

On his last U.S. visit, the third-in-line to the British throne stormed last year into the headlines when he was caught frolicking in the nude with a woman after an alleged game of strip billiards in his Las Vegas hotel room.
